Fresh fish from a land-based fish farm

Pieni Kalatila (Little Fishfarm) is a land-based fishfarm in Uusikaupunki, Finland, using recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). We breed whitefish and rainbow trout.

Fish is a great source of protein that contains a lot of good fats and vitamin D. However, fishing and fish farming today pose a significant burden on the environment, especially on inland and coastal waters.

We grow our fish at Little Fish Farm in a sustainable way, with lower environmental impact. Our production chain from farm to store is unique: the transport and storage times are much shorter than those of sea grown fish. The fish caught today at the Little Fishfarm is on your plate by tomorrow.

New generation, sustainable food production

The critical condition of the Baltic Sea, environmental changes and the decline of wild fish populations as a result of overharvest made us think of more environmentally-friendly ways to grow fish. We developed a whole new way of producing fish on dry land, with a lower environmental load. Recirculation aquaculture systems (RAS) represent a new and unique way to farm fish with a ”controlled” environment, reducing remarkably the nutrient input to the sea. Our closed circulation concept is a new generation system of sustainable production, where waste, energy, heat, nutrients and carbon dioxide are utilized and recycled for energy and food production. Our production chain is nearly carbon neutral. Sounds like a fish story, but it is really true!
